Q – What got you started in this ministry?
A few years ago, one of my friends brought a horse to me that was giving him a little trouble. As I started doing some ground work with him in the training pen, he was giving me a lot of resistance. He reared up, constantly pulled against me, and showed a total lack of submission. In his mind, he was the Alpha in our relationship. At one point in our struggle for “king of the mountain”, I remember thinking that if he would just submit to me, that his life would get a lot easier real fast.
As I kept working with him, I thought how that must be similar to what God is thinking when we rebel against Him. Then I started to wonder if a horse demonstration to illustrate biblical concepts would strike a chord of interest with people. I asked a few friends about it and after getting encouragement from them, I decided to test the waters. What I have found is that in that people have a natural affinity for horses and they seem to really connect with the object lessons.
Q - What goes on in your presentation?
I talk to the audience about how horses think and how we can communicate with them most effectively. Then I put the horse through a few paces and to try and teach him something new. As the horse begins to react to the lesson, I will draw spiritual analogies from the process.
Q - What types of topics do you cover?
Most of the time the presentations are fairly generic, but sometimes I can tie my demonstration into a theme that the host requests. The things I talk about are really just fundamental Christian principles in the Bible. What people seem to like is that this is a different approach than what they have experienced before. Audience members tell me that using the horse as a visual aid helps them grasp the principles we discuss even thought they may have already been familiar with the concepts.
Some object lessons we’ve have done in the past cover:
- submission to God’s will
- faith and trust
- growing in our faith
- being in relationship with the Father
